Celebrating National Small Business Month with Central One Works

May is National Small Business Month, and this year we set out to share the stories behind the people building something of their own.

Throughout the month, we featured a different business member each week as part of our new video series, Central One Works.

Behind every storefront, service, and success story was someone willing to take a chance on themselves. Someone willing to pursue an idea without knowing exactly where it would lead.

And that takes courage.

Some business owners left stable careers. Some started from scratch during uncertain times. Others carried on family traditions or found new ways to serve the people around them. No matter their path, each story reflected the same thing: the courage to build something meaningful.

Here are the stories we shared this month:

Week One: Donnie’s Colonial Barber Shop

Donnie is keeping an old-school tradition alive in downtown Westborough.

After taking over a barber shop that first opened in the 1970s, he chose to preserve the atmosphere people had grown up with and loved for decades. From the wood-paneled walls to the sound of vinyl records playing in the background, Donnie’s shop feels like stepping back into a simpler time.

His family has banked with Central One for decades, so when it came time to choose a financial partner for his business, the decision felt natural.

Stories like Donnie’s remind us how important small businesses are to the character and history of our communities.

Week Two: Eagle Eye Beauty

Rudina started her business during one of the most uncertain times imaginable: 2020.

After being laid off from her marketing career during the pandemic, she decided to bet on herself and pursue her passion for beauty services. What started in the basement of her home slowly grew into something bigger.

Today, Eagle Eye Beauty is a full studio space in Worcester built on years of determination and consistency.

Rudina chose Central One because she wanted a financial partner that could support her growth and understand her goals as a small business owner.

Business owners like Rudina prove what can happen when someone is willing to bet on themselves, even during uncertain times.

Week Three: Simply Tires by Harpins

Before opening her family-owned tire business, Lianie worked in social services helping families through difficult moments.

Today, that same passion for helping people continues through her business.

Inspired by her husband’s passion for vehicle safety and their shared desire to serve others honestly and fairly, Lianie set out to create a business rooted in faith, integrity, and care for the community.

When it came time to open their doors, they wanted a financial partner that would make business easier, allowing them to spend less time navigating hurdles and more time focusing on their customers.

Lianie’s story shows how purpose doesn’t change, even when the work does.

Week Four: Wicked Wheels

Killian’s business looks a little different than most. It’s always on the move.

Originally from Chicago, Killian moved to Worcester without a car and quickly learned how challenging navigating a hilly city could be. Everything changed when she discovered electric bikes.

After spending nine years at Tesla working in the solar and battery division, she turned her passion for e-bikes into a business focused on changing the way Worcester moves.

What mattered most to Killian was finding a financial partner that felt human. Someone she could actually reach when she needed support and a team that felt invested in local businesses like hers.

Innovation comes from seeing everyday problems differently, and that’s exactly what Killian does.

Supporting the People Behind Small Business

Every story we shared this month looked different, but each one started with someone willing to take a chance on an idea they believed in.

That’s why supporting small businesses means so much to us.

Business banking should feel personal. Business owners deserve real support and financial solutions designed around their goals, not one-size-fits-all systems.

If you’re thinking about starting a business, growing an existing one, or looking for a financial partner that takes the time to understand your vision, we’d love to connect.

We’d be proud to support your story, too.
