Random Acts of Kindness Week: Supporting Neighbors and Local Businesses

“Make Kindness the Norm” – The Random Acts of Kindness Foundation

Making kindness the norm is something we strive for every day, all year long. But during Random Acts of Kindness Week, we get the chance to take that commitment beyond our branches and into the communities we call home.

It’s no secret that life feels heavier lately. Stress has always been part of modern life, but for many Americans, it has started to feel like a constant.  The American Psychological Association’s Stress in America survey shows that 75% of Americans experience physical or emotional symptoms tied to stress. Which is why kindness matters now more than ever.

When stress is present, any acts of kindness, no matter how small, can offer relief.

The Science Behind Kindness

Kindness is scientifically proven to be good for your health.

According to The Random Acts of Kindness Foundation, witnessing or engaging in acts of kindness releases feel-good chemicals in the brain, including oxytocin and serotonin. These chemicals help calm the nervous system, boost mood, and reduce stress.

Acts of kindness also increase the brain’s production of endorphins, the body’s natural pain reliever, while lessening levels of cortisol, the hormone associated with stress.

Research shared by Dr. David R. Hamilton shows that kindness creates emotional warmth, releasing oxytocin, which helps dilate blood vessels and lower blood pressure. This is why oxytocin is often referred to as a cardioprotective hormone because it helps protect heart health.

Simply put, kindness is good for your mind, your body, and your community.

Turning Kindness Into Action

During Random Acts of Kindness Week, each Central One branch was given $500 to spend in their local communities through acts of kindness. From covering someone’s gas or lunch to showing appreciation for local police and fire departments, these moments created smiles, connection, and a ripple effect of positivity.

Owen Russell, Central One’s Vice President of Retail Services, put it best:

“Having our branches go out into the community to spread kindness is something we look forward to every year. We believe in being more than just a financial institution; we are a dedicated partner in building a brighter, more compassionate future for the communities we serve.”

While most of our branches were out supporting local businesses and community members throughout the week, we were able to capture Auburn Branch Manager Andri Jashari and his team spreading kindness in Auburn, as well as Branch Manager Debra Paciello surprising customers by covering coffee orders in Westborough.

Not only did these efforts support community members, they also uplifted small businesses that help make our neighborhoods feel like home.

Here are just some of the small businesses supported during Random Acts of Kindness Week:

Arcade Snacks Fine Nuts & Dried Fruits

Auburn Town Pizza

Rocco’s Donuts

Red Barn Coffee Roasters

Dean Park Pizza

Little Beginnings

Dinky’s Blue Belle Diner

Brody’s Diner

MOTW Coffee & Pastries

You can watch the video below to see these moments of kindness in action.

Kindness Is Who We Are

Being kind is part of Central One’s DNA. It’s how we show up, how we connect, and how we support the people around us.

We loved participating in Random Acts of Kindness Week this year, and we’re excited to keep making kindness the norm for many years to come. 💛

Our branch lobbies and drive-ups will close at 3 PM on Wednesday, April 8th for an employee event. Our Member Support Center will close at 3:30 PM.
