A Heart for Hope: Leading the Survivors Lap

We are honored to share that Debra Paciello, our Westborough Branch Manager, will be leading the UMASS Cancer Walk’s Survivor Lap this Sunday, September 27, at Polar Park.  

The UMASS Cancer Walk is a large-scale fundraising event where thousands of people gather to fight cancer and show their support for healthcare providers, researchers, patients, and survivors. Funds from the event support research by UMASS Chan Medical School in their efforts to create groundbreaking cancer treatments and therapies for patients in central Massachusetts. Since its debut in 1999, supporters have raised more than $17 million, becoming one of the region’s largest one-day fundraising events. 

For Debra, the walk has been a meaningful part of her life for more than two decades, first as someone supporting loved ones affected by cancer and later as a survivor herself.  

In 2022, she brought that commitment to Central One by starting the “Central One-ders” Cancer Walk team. This year marks the fourth year that team will participate, coming together to show their support for those affected by cancer. 

The walk became even more personal when Debra was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2010. After undergoing intensive treatment and surgery, she successfully completed treatment. Then, in 2023, she received another breast cancer diagnosis and once again faced intensive treatment and surgery. 

Today, Debra continues to receive regular testing, with no signs of recurrence. She credits her dedicated medical team, whom she calls her “superheroes,” for the care and support they provided throughout both experiences. 

This year, Debra will take on an especially meaningful role as she leads the survivors lap.

“I am incredibly proud to lead the Survivors Lap at this year’s cancer walk,” Debra explains. “As a two-time cancer survivor, seeing so many people come together to celebrate survivors, honor those we’ve lost, and support the fight against cancer is deeply meaningful. I’m especially grateful for the support of Central One, whose encouragement and sponsorship have helped make this moment possible. We walk with hope, strength, and a shared commitment to making a difference.” 

Along with having a Central One team member lead the Survivors Lap, we’re proud to support this year’s Cancer Walk as a $5,000 Fighter Sponsor. Our employees have also raised $2,525 in donations to support cancer research. 

For Debra, leading this year’s survivors lap is another meaningful chapter in a journey that has spanned more than two decades. Her story is one of resilience, strength, and a commitment to showing up for others.  

We feel incredibly lucky to have Debra on the Central One team, and we’ll be cheering her on every step of the way.
